“How Many Breaths? - In Memory of George Floyd and Countless Others”
Virtual World Premiere & Round Table Q&A
Recorded on September 27, 2020
In the wake of the loss of George Floyd and much unrest in our beloved Twin Cities, Chamber Music Society of Minnesota Co-Artistic Director and violinist Ariana Kim together with distinguished narrator Lou Bellamy, prominent writer-narrator Sarah Bellamy, and renowned composer-activist Steve Heitzeg, created a multimedia piece for solo violin + spoken word entitled, "How Many Breaths? – In Memory of George Floyd and Countless Others." The work includes original text and music performed by Lou, Sarah, and Ariana, sewn together with images and video of the powerful street art and demonstration footage captured from around the Twin Cities.
The premiere of the piece was presented virtually by the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota from the Walker West Academy on Sunday, September 27th, 2020, followed by a round-table Q & A session with the contributing artists. Questions were received in real-time by our moderator, TV host and anti-bias education specialist Sherine Onukwuwe who helped lead a robust discussion surrounding the piece and its subject matter.
